Building trust and shaping our future through the power of deliberation
By fostering spaces for open dialogue and mutual learning, we cultivate an informed society and strengthen our relationships to each other and our institutions.
I am dedicated to using deliberation to inform and strengthen the ways we engage with each other and our institutions in our society. At the Stanford Deliberative Democracy Lab, I work alongside Jim Fishkin to pioneer and implement the groundbreaking method of Deliberative Polling®. This innovative approach brings diverse voices together to discuss critical issues under optimal conditions, fostering informed and balanced public opinion.
I work to address three major challenges facing modern democracies: rational ignorance, phantom opinions, and echo chambers. By creating spaces where people can think, talk, and learn from each other, I help combat these issues and promote not only a more inclusive and thoughtful democratic process, but bringing deliberation across industries and fields to create more trust and understanding.
With a wealth of experience conducting Deliberative Polls in over 50 countries, I have seen firsthand the positive impact of deliberation on policy and public opinion. From shaping energy policies in Texas to fostering social integration in Bulgaria, my efforts have led to meaningful and lasting change.
Further, I am committed to scaling deliberation to create a deliberative society through our AI-assisted deliberation platform (a partnership with Stanford Crowdsourced Democracy Team), enabling broader participation and helping to build the skills necessary for effective civic engagement. I am keen on not only enhancing democratic practices but also empowering individuals to become more active and informed. I am particularly interested in the K-16, where I believe we can provide necessary opportunities to enable young people to build, foster, and practice what we need to have a deliberative society.
